In mid-August you can usually pick chanterelles in the mountains. In some years, there are plenty of them if the summer has offered both rain and warm weather. 2024 turned out to be an abundant chanterelle year. The serious pickers don’t like to reveal their best mushroom spots. It is important to be the first on the spot so that the gold of the forest can be filled in your basket. We have a relative living in the mountains who usually supplies us with the delicacies. The more fun of course, if you have picked them yourself. At first, it can be a bit difficult to see them as they grow well camouflaged among the grass and leaves on the slopes, but if you find one, you surely will discover more. A lot of tasty dishes can be prepared from this delicious mushroom, like pies, sauces, stews or sandwiches. A treasure to find in the freezer when you want to surprise guests with something extra tasty.
Kitchen towel with grandmother’s monogram.
Before the cleaned chanterelles were put back in the basket, I put in one of my grandmother’s tea towels with her embroidered initials, E.J, Ester Jonsson. She has sewn the monogram with red thread onto the white towel with green stripes. No idea how old it might be, but it has a quality you can’t possibly find these days. Probably washed a considerable number of times but washed and ironed it looks like new. The yellow chanterelles shine beautifully with their strong yellow color. The basket was placed on a wind-stained wooden plank floor and in the background some milkweed plants that are at the end of their bloom are growing. I have saved the painting under the website’s gallery under the category Lapland – summer.
