The Northern landscape has a special place in my heart.

The ice church.

After painting a colourful flower, my thoughts wandered back to my hometown, and I decided to paint something specific from Vilhelmina. Every February, a winter festival is celebrated in Wilhelmina, which is called www and stands for Wilhelmina Winter Weekend, where various activities related to winter, snow and cold take place over several days. A nice feature is when the association Lions are building the ice church. The blocks of ice are cut out of a lake in Siksjönäs, then they are transported to Vilhelmina, where these skilled craftsmen and Lions supporters build the blocks of ice into a beautiful ice church. During the www weekend, both baptisms and weddings are usually celebrated in the ice church. Vilhelmina residents and visitors passing by often stop to admire the masterpiece. Depending on weather conditions and temperature, the character of the ice church changes. In this case, I chose to let the light on the horizon shine through the ice and then be reflected in the snow. I wanted to give ice church as harmonious appearance as possible. What also makes it so unique and a bit magical is that no one knows how long it will be able to remain for public viewing, as it is completely controlled by the weather. If the freezing temperatures persist, it can stand for a long time, but if there is a thaw, you may be forced to tear it down due to the risk of the melting ice blocks falling. If you haven´t seen the ice church before, maybe this gave you another reason to visit Vilhelmina. Keep an eye out then for next year’s version, which is scheduled to start construction on January 29, 2024.

Painting snow and ice.

I don’t know how many times I have received the comment “But Britta isn´t the snow white?” I usually answer patiently “No, it’s not always white, it depends entirely on the light, what time of day, etc.”. At the same time, I understand that if you have not grown up in the part of the world where the snow remains for several months, you cannot know. The expression, White as snow is not always appropriate. In any case, I have done my interpretation of snow, ice and light and it would be interesting to know if you think I have managed to capture the moment. The painting is saved on my website’s gallery under Lapland winter.
