Back at Bergbackatjärn.

This painting project was a little bit different from previous projects I´ve done. I was asked if I could make a new version of a motif that I had painted 7 years ago. Since the particular pond has a special place in my heart, I decided to accept the challenge. I chose not to look back at the paintwork that I created in 2013 instead I let the new canvas reflect my current interpretation of the scenery. The canvas and I travel together to a day in the end of autumn, when the winter is just around the corner. It feels crispy outside and the cheeks become reddish in the cold and fresh air. The vegetation has changed colours from green to brown tones. Grass and straws have been beautifully edged with decorative white frost. The first snow spots can be seen on the ground. The new ice is still too thin to be walked on. The sky’s pastel colours cast light reflections on the trees on the other side of the pond. A feeling of peace and tranquillity permeates the landscape.

How I create depth in an image.

For me, it is important to create depth in my paintings. I always imagine that the motif consists of several different layers. What I imagine is the furthest away I always start with and then I paint myself “out of the painting” and at last I finish off with sharper details in the foreground. My role is far away the more diffuse and the closer the viewer the more details. Do you think I manage to capture that in this painting? This week, the painting begins its journey to its new home in Sweden. You will find the painting in the gallery, under the category Lapland autumn.
