THE FIRST LAYER OF SNOW

The first layer of snow.

It is something special when the first snow flakes begin to fall and creating the first layer of snow. Mother Nature prepares for a long, sometimes very cold winter. The ground is frozen and hard, the snow falls like a soft blanket on top, which is getting thicker during the winter. All trees and plants have already dropped their leaves and are now waiting for the extreme cold which is about to arrive. For me it is a melancholic feeling when the landscape turns from green to white. Perhaps because the winter is so long in Lapland and you know what to expect. But it is also something peaceful and beautiful with the winter´s arrival. In this painting I wanted to capture the cold, rugged landscape and the contrast between the dark spruce trees against the bright winter sky shifting in yellow pastel tones.

More than six months of white.

For those who have not lived in Lapland it is probably hard to imagine that more than half a year is winter. It starts with the first thin layer and after a few months the mounds are more than a meter high. When I look at this painting, I imagine myself stepping into the landscape, the snow is just a few centimeters deep and for each step my shoes are making a crunching sound. Welcome winter! You´ll find the the piece of art in the category “Lapland winter” in my gallery.
