This time I have chosen to interpret a place where little has changed. I take you to the outskirts of Dorotea municipality’s southernmost village, Gran\u00e5sen. About three km from the village in the direction of Svanabyn you\u00b4ll find the Vittertrappan, The steps of Vittra, which is a 15 m long stone formation in the rock that has the shape of a staircase that winds up the mountain. My common sense says that it was created by the inland ice from the last ice age up north, but the legend says it was the hiking path of \u201cvittra\u201d. If you aren\u2019t from up north you probably you don\u2019t know what \u201cvittra\u201d is. In the past many stories were told about \u201cvittra\u201d, a natural spirit, a mythological creature who were best to keep up with. In northern Sweden, \u201cvittra\u201d were mythical people within the folklore of Nordic herding culture, said to live in the underground or in the rocks near people’s farm house with their bewitched cattle. They were peaceful if they were not disturbed. Their hiking trails were called \u201cvitter\u201d paths, which were sometimes marked on the old maps so people could avoid building their cottages close by. Take a visit to the Vittertrappan and maybe you will catch a glimpse of the \u201cvittra\u201d if they are still there. But before your visit you can day dream about the place with help of my painting.<\/p>\n
Painting on stone instead of painting on canvas.<\/strong><\/p>\n The idea of \u200bmaking an interpretation of \u201cVittertrappan\u201d came from one of my visitors at last summer’s exhibition. It woke up an interest in me do this project and in the autumn I thought about how to do it in the best credible way. It struck me that using stone surface as a substrate instead of canvas would be perfect for this project. This is a technique that I have used before in my painting. A boulder is cut with laser and forms a leafy layer of stone, a stone film you could call it, which is attached to a canvas or in this case a wooden plate. The stone layer is so thin that it can be folded around the corner only that sounds magical, right? Then I let the stone become part of the painting, I leave some parts without colour and let the background be integrated into my motif.
